Retirement Redefined – Security, Dignity, and Legacy
Date of Association with CovaiCare: Our formal association with Covai (then) and now CovaiCare commenced on January 25, 2010, and has continued uninterrupted to date.
1. Why Retirement Communities?
A Paradigm Shift After a Luxurious Corporate Life:
After decades of a fulfilling and privileged corporate life, my husband and I entered retirement not out of compulsion but by choice. We had stability, recognition, and financial security. Retirement, for us, was not a decline. It was a transition.
The decision to move into a retirement community was deliberate and deeply thought through. It was not an emotional reaction. It was structured planning. My husband and I discussed this extensively between ourselves and then communicated our decision to move into a retirement community to our children. My husband is no more today, but I still remember those conversations. We reassured our children that there would be no sudden decline in lifestyle, no erosion of independence, and no compromise in dignity.
We were not stepping away from life. We were redefining it. Even after my husband’s passing, that decision stands validated.
2. Personal Goals in Retirement:
Retirement gave us space to pursue what truly mattered. We wanted to dedicate more time to serve the humanity. We wished to deepen our spiritual discipline. We wanted to read, reflect, and document our journey.
Our selection of Covai S3 Retirement Community was inspired not only by practical considerations but also by spiritual resonance. Covai S3 is not a place where a senior citizen is abandoned. It is a place where every individual is embraced, supported, and guided with care and dignity until the final call of life. Many have heard the term Kasi Vasi, where individuals leave home to spend their last days in Kasi (Varanasi or Benares), chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” and, seeking spiritual liberation.
We selected Covai S3 RC with similar spiritual intentions, yet we combined our devotion with active service. Here, we could continue our chanting and spiritual practices, while contributing to the community. In this way, life and devotion remained intertwined.
Our faith in Lord Pattesswarar of Perur, also called Southern Kasi, has been deeply affirmed in this journey. He has liberated his devotees, and through the structured, compassionate environment at Covai S3 RC , we felt a spiritual resonance akin to living one’s final days in Kasi itself, yet surrounded by loving care, community, and purpose.
My husband fulfilled his aspiration through his book Twilight, in which he described life at Covai S3 RC as a paradise on earth. Those words reflected contentment, peace, and structure. For us, retirement was not a withdrawal from relevance. It was a purposeful engagement.
3. Continuity of Core Values
Since January 25, 2010, there have naturally been changes in staff and residents. That is the nature of any institution over time, especially in a retirement community. However, the core values of CovaiCare have remained consistent. These values include dignity in ageing, structured independence, disciplined governance, safety, and compassionate care. They have directly contributed to my mental peace, physical wellbeing, and emotional security. Consistency of governance and conduct has been evident throughout my association.
4. Services and Daily Operational Support
Daily life at Covai S3 has been supported by efficient and accountable systems. Safety, security, maintenance, housekeeping, and operational needs are addressed promptly. A simple call is sufficient to get one’s specific issues are addressed to efficiently. The detailed SOPs that CovaiCare has laid down for all departments and employees ensures that services and care are delivered in a systematic manner with checks and balances in place.
The professionalism of the staff has been par excellent. Freed from routine logistical burdens, my husband and I were able to focus on meaningful pursuits rather than management of household tasks. Our independence was preserved and strengthened by CovaiCare.
5. Food and Nutritional Care
Nutrition has been a pillar of sustained wellbeing. Over the past fourteen years since we moved in to Covai S3 RC, I have experienced consistency in hygiene, quality, and dietary balance. As age brought changing health needs, food plans were adjusted accordingly. The kitchen staff may have changed over time, but standards did not. Religious and personal dietary considerations were respected. Meals are periodically reviewed to maintain quality benchmarks. The residents are involved in deciding the Menu This consistency has directly contributed to my health stability.
6. Highlights of Life at Covai S3 RC:
- Ambience, greenery and natural environment:
Thanks to the greenery we breathe fresh and clean air. Located at the foothills of Appa Swamy Hills, the environment is serene and expansive.Nature is not distant here. Peacocks walk freely. The seven sisters birds gather in lively groups. The Myna appears regularly. Even a one-legged crow faithfully returns and waits for his companion. These small but powerful rhythms of nature brought comfort, especially after my husband’s passing.
- Medical and Nursing Care
Medical care within the campus has been structured and is dependable.
Regular health checkups are conducted. Doctors visit the campus. Medical records are maintained systematically. Nursing care is available 24X7.A Resident Manager is accessible at all times. During hospital admissions, coordination is handled efficiently and sensitively.
When my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he made it clear in his living will that after completing chemotherapy, he did not wish to return to hospital care. He wanted to remain at home. Covai S3 RC transformed our residence into a fully supported care environment. Nursing and medical supervision were available at all times. Every detail of his care was managed with precision, compassion, and respect. The medical team, led by Dr Basker, ensured that his pain was alleviated and his dignity preserved.
For nearly one month, my husband received uninterrupted care in his home. He was never alone, never anxious, and never deprived of comfort. The staff moved with dedication and attentiveness that went far beyond duty. They honoured not just his medical needs but his very essence, his preferences, and his sense of peace.
c. Covid Care and, Crisis Response
During the Covid crisis, the institutional response was disciplined and structured.
Preventive measures were implemented seriously as per the protocols spelt out. Care extended to residents, staff, and the surrounding community. Vaccinations were arranged in the community so that elderly residents did not have to venture outside the retirement community for vaccinations and thus, avoid contacts with strangers. The protocols even monitored the staff who came from nearby village and, residents were made to avoid any contact with the staff when they visited any villa for daily chores. The principle was clear – every life mattered. I believe that in none of the CovaiCare managed retirement communities in multiple cities, no resident was affected by this deadly virus. The residents cooperated with the management and staff to ensure that everyone is safe.
- Innovation and Preventive Care
- Several support systems strengthened resident wellbeing. An ATM facility was made available within the campus. Banks came to our doorsteps instead of the elderly going to the banks.
- Continuity of fruits and vegetables supply at all times.
- Coordinated pharmacy support
- Preventive healthcare camps including eye, dental, and laboratory services
- Flu and shingles vaccination drives
- The Assisted Living Care facility ensures that residents requiring additional support remain within familiar surroundings while receiving enhanced care. An Assisted Care Centre was created for those who had serious ailments, which is managed by 24X7 nurse and caregivers, whose work is monitored
- Periodic measurement of health parameters is being done.
- Preventive care works on the mantra of “measure, monitor and moderate health parameters’ of the residents.
- Housekeeping Services:
Housekeeping services have been outstanding and exemplary. My home has always been an open house for friends and relatives. My husband and I were Green Card holders and stayed abroad for nearly six months each year. During our absence, the residence was maintained in impeccable condition. Each time we returned, it was in showroom condition. In fourteen years, I have never supervised even one periodic deep cleaning of the house. The systems function independently and efficiently without resident oversight.
- Dignity in the Final Journey
When a resident passes away, the process is conducted with dignity and deep personal care, personally supervised and attended by Colonel Achal Sridharan. Every step is handled with sensitivity, compassion, and respect. Families are guided and supported throughout the process, ensuring that their loved one’s last moments are peaceful and dignified.
This personal attention of the management brings profound emotional reassurance not only to the residents but also to their children and family members living abroad. Knowing that the Colonel, as the Head of the Family, personally oversees and attends to the final journey, gives them peace of mind. They can be confident that their parents’ care and dignity are never compromised. They do not have to worry about procedures, logistics, or respect for final wishes.
Witnessing and experiencing this care instils trust, security, and comfort. The knowledge that the Head of the Family is personally involved allows children abroad to feel connected, reassured, and confident that their parents’ final journey is managed with devotion, respect, and dignity.
- A Legacy Passed to the Next Generation
My husband and I were Green Card holders. We carefully considered the advantages and disadvantages of continuing life abroad versus returning permanently to India.
After deep reflection, we made a conscious decision to abandon our Green Card status. We chose to settle down during our sunset years at CovaiS3 RC with clarity and, not compulsion. We have no regrets in taking this decision.
Many associations that began in the early years of our stay have grown into enduring bonds. These relationships now extend beyond our generation to our children, who are spread across the world.
Retirement, for us, was never an end. It was a structured transition built on foresight.
In choosing to live in Covai S3 RC, we did not close a chapter in our lives. We built a legacy, one that continues beyond us.
- The Most Impactful Chapter of My Life in S3
When my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he faced the news with courage and clarity. He made one wish absolutely clear – after completing his rounds of chemotherapy, he did not want to return to a hospital. He wished to remain at home, surrounded by familiar spaces and the life that we had carefully built together. His living will reflects his deeply personal desire.
I cannot find words adequate to describe how CovaiCare responded. They transformed our home into a fully supported care environment, providing nursing and medical supervision at all times.
In those final days, he often reflected on the life we had shared at S3. His last spoken words were testimony to the extraordinary environment, the community, and the care that surrounded him. His words, simple yet profound, expressed gratitude, contentment, and love for the life he lived there.
His book Twilight captures this experience, the harmony, the structure, the joy, and the comfort that defined his final years. He described life at Covai S3 RC as a paradise on earth, a place where one could live fully, safely, and with dignity.
Even now, I remain ever grateful to the leadership, the staff, and the community that turned his last wish into reality and made his final chapter peaceful, meaningful, and complete. Life continues Unfolding one day at a time.
