We were two innocent hearts, never in love before
Two tentative souls, till the magic of the first kiss
Hand in hand, fingers sweating, burning with fire within
Every touch, every glance a never before bliss
Proposal on knees bent, promise of a life of tender sharing
Dancing in the air, till the golden ring descended from heaven
Midnight feedings, hearts still fluttering, love shows us the path to caring
New relations, extended families, the storm of love and stress
Rediscovering each other, rumblings and ramblings aside
We were two innocent hearts, love still winning over the mess
Rushed coffee hours, family before work, the torch seeks to reignite
Sons graduate, find their own, our hearts swell with pride
Girls, bolder than before, venture to find their own white knight
Greying years, sharing stories with mischief in our eyes
With an occasional smile that still takes us to the stars
Life is good we intone, feeling in our minds how time flies
Loss and lonely tears, grief refuses to fade
Can hearts bloom again, at sixty and plus two seventy
Hope awaits in the corners of the heart, wondering where we strayed
Watching the birds and the silent memories of the past
Wrinkled fingers entwining each other
We are two lonely hearts, love and affection that forever will last.
The first line is from the song “ We were two innocent hearts” by Marion Ryan · 1956
