Happiness - a state of Mind

There once lived a strange man in a village. He was one of the most unfortunate people in the world. The whole village was tired of him; he was always gloomy, he constantly complained and was always in a bad mood.
His words were poisonous, he always spewed venom. People avoided him, because his misfortune became contagious. It was even unnatural and insulting to be happy next to him, such was the feeling of unhappiness he created in others.
But one day, an incredible thing happened. He looked happy, chirpy and at peace with himself and with everybody. He was seen smiling at others, his face looked fresh, he had a kind word for all, he was seen respecting his elders, helping all - in fact it seemed he had undergone a total change in how he saw all around him. The man who was known for his complaining nature overnight became the darling of all.
The whole village gathered together and asked the man:
What happened to you? What is this magic that has changed you completely?
“Nothing special”, the man said. “All these years I have been chasing happiness, and it was frustrating. The more I chased it, the farther it went from me. And then I decided to live without happiness and just enjoy life as it came. And now, I am very very happy”.
Moral of the story:
Don’t run after happiness. Enjoy your life come what may. Be happy and do things and not wait for things to happen to be happy. We shall then find happiness coming after us.
